Engineering Masters Degree

An engineering masters degree is one post-graduate title that can carry either of two concepts: one, an academic-based orientation or a work-based title. This will depend om where you will take your post-graduate education on higher engineering.

For example, if you intend to get your engineering masters degree in the United Kingdom, then what you could be conferred is a degree that is more of an undergraduate course. Structure-wise, you should find the degree program to be highly akin to the pattern often followed when you pursue a baccalaureate degree where lectures, regular exams, coursework, and laboratory experiments are components that you will have to deal with. (1)

In contrast, an engineering masters degree in many American universities is generally coursework-oriented. This means that you get to apply what you learned to actual situations and normally, you get to do this for the entire program duration which typically lasts for about two years. Qualified students will usually be immersed in strong engineering backgrounds when availing of an engineering masters degree program. (2)

A two-year masters degree program in engineering offered in many US post-graduate schools can either be of the Master of Science type or the Master of Engineering variety. Either way, you should expect lots of coursework when taking up these degrees and definitely a whole lot easier as compared to what you can encounter when pursuing an engineering masters degree in Canada. A Canadian engineering masters degree often involves both coursework and research since apart from applying what you learn, you will also be required to submit a thesis material or at least a research paper on a significant engineering principle. (3)

You might think that higher education in engineering systems is not an interesting field. Yet, based on government statistics, from the early 80's up to 1991, a significant increase in the actual number of people pursuing masteral degree courses in science and engineering was seen. (4) This means that we now have more highly qualified engineers who can competently handle a continuously evolving modern technology.

In addition, you should find the other aspects of the study quite interesting. This has to do with the fact that while pursuing an engineering masters degree experienced a significant increase, a corresponding decline in the actual number of men who were conferred the needed degree was experienced as more women found themselves pursuing a course that were previously dominated by males.
